Correct selection of DC Isolation device

DC isolation devices are provided in DCDB boxes to provide safe isolation of the DC side of the system from the inverter so that maintenance work can be carried out easily and safely. Two types of DC isolation devices are available: DC Isolator and DC MCB.

In recent years, many inverter manufacturers have included a DC isolator or a DC switch in the inverter itself. In this scenario, an extra DC isolation device might not be always required.

A DC isolation device should be added in the system, if:

  • The inverter does not have an inbuilt DC Isolator or DC Switch.
  • Inverter’s DC isolation switch is not accessible
  • Inverter and DCDB are not installed next to each other. For example, if an inverter is installed downstairs in the electrical room and DCDB is installed on the roof itself.
